DO ONLY SAINTS GO TO
HEAVEN?
BY DR MERVYN ABREO
First
of all we have to get the correct Biblical perceptive of what a ‘saint’ really
is. And we do so by erasing the incorrect picture we may have wrongly developed
inadvertently.
Normally people imagine a saint to be someone who had led a holy, sinless life, away from even the clean healthy pleasures of this world, who prays and meditates all the time, enduring his or her days in penance and sacrifice. Saints are normally portrayed with a bright light or halo around the head.
The
Biblical definition of a saint is different! Anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as
Lord and Savior, that is any ‘born-again’ Christian, is a saint! This
excludes everyone else, including those born into a Christian home, until they
become true Christians after they reach the age of reason and make a voluntary
decision for Christ! Therefore this definitely excludes even those so called
holy persons described in the previous chapter. And you definitely do not have
to die to become a saint! Not a physical death but when you die to self, and
give your life to Jesus, it is then that you become a saint!
A
saint is the common ordinary person you probably brush shoulders with every
day, as long as they are true Christians. That is why, when Paul or Peter
addresses the ordinary Christian as saints, when addressing them in their
letters in the New Testament.
King David, in the psalms, inspired by God
said,
“As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is
all My delight.” (Psalm 16:3).
